Frequently Asked Questions

  • What division am I eligible for?

Eligibility is determined by a player's current published Standard/Classic ratings.

Look up your published Standard/Classic FIDE and ACF ratings, and check our Division Requirements table.

Still unsure? Email us for advice.

  • Can I play in more than one division?

No. As the divisions are played at the same time, you cannot participate in more than one division.

All players are welcome to participate in the Saturday night Lightning events.

  • I don't have any ratings. Can I play?

Unrated players are eligible for the Under 1200s or the Mini.

Note for Overseas Players: If playing in the Mini, you must have a FIDE ID issued by your national chess federation.

  • I'm unrated. What can I win?

Unrated players are only eligible for designated Unrated prizes.

  • Can I use my Rapid/Blitz rating to qualify?

No. Only Classic/Standard ratings are accepted for the Doeberl Cup divisions.

  • Which ratings are used for the Lightning events?

The Lightning events will be rated on the ACF Rapid list, therefore the ACF Rapid list will be used for eligibility.

(Unrated players on the Rapid List will use ACF Standard followed by FIDE Blitz, if they have one.)

  • Overseas player: I don't have an ACF rating.

Overseas players without an ACF rating will use their FIDE or Official National Rating as an equivalent.

  • Overseas player: I don't have a FIDE ID. Can I play?

Before registering for the Doeberl Cup, you must first obtain a FIDE ID through your own national chess federation.

  • I need to withdraw. How do I do that?

Contact the Doeberl Cup team as soon as possible using the Contact form or message us on the Facebook page.

As per the Rules regarding withdrawal and fee refund, players withdrawing more than 7 days before the start of their division are entitled to a full refund, less processing fees. If a player withdraws within 7 days of the start of their division a 50% refund will be issued. Any player who withdraws after the start of their division forfeits their registration fee.

See our current withdrawal policy as detailed on the Rules page.

  • When is the next event?

The Doeberl Cup is always held over the Easter Long Weekend every year.

The Premier division starts the day before Good Friday. All other divisions start on Good Friday. The event concludes on Easter Monday.

Search for "public holidays Australia" and the year in question. For example, the 2026 Doeberl Cup will be Thursday April 2 to Monday April 6.
